By Elaine Halligan.

My Child's Different draws lessons from the transformational journey of a young man who was written off by society but went on to become a budding entrepreneur.

The book explores the enabling role that parents can play in maximising the potential of children who are seen as ‘different’ or ‘difficult’. With labels such as dyslexia, ADHD, PDA, ODD, SID and DCD, this book will help you support your neuro diverse child and unlock their potential.

In ‘My Child’s Different’ I tell the true story of my son Sam.

By the age of seven, he had been excluded from three schools and was later labelled as having a whole host of conditions, ranging from autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) to pathological demand avoidance (PDA) to severe dyslexia. He had become ‘the alphabet kid’.

However my husband and I never gave up on him.

Why I wrote the book

We took positive parenting courses and researched all kinds of different therapies to support him. We believed he was a good and capable person, and that belief in turn gave our son Sam resilience, grit and an ability to persevere in the face of adversity.

I wrote the book in order to give hope to all parents and carers who for a variety of reasons may be concerned about what the future holds for their children, and to demonstrate how, with the use of positive parenting skills, all children’s potential can be unlocked. My Child’s Different is a celebration of all the unique qualities those who are different bring to society.

At times it’s heart breaking, but also entertaining and positive.

I challenge you not to laugh and cry as you read the story and escapades, from letting the farm yard animals out at one school, through to Sam’s adventures driving from London to Mongolia, 18,000 kms, across deserts and mountain terrain in a 1.2 litre Skoda car!

  • Suitable for any parent, or those working with children, who feel their child is different or difficult

  • A story of hope and a celebration of all the unique qualities children with specific learning needs, diagnosed or not, can bring to society.

  • Unique story as has the voice of Elaine’s parenting coach and former business partner Melissa Hood, together with Sam’s voice as a young adult, recounting his deepest thoughts, memories and experiences of not fitting in to the traditional education system.

“It is really important that we provide young people with the support they need to succeed and to understand dyslexia as a different and brilliant way of thinking. Alternative thinking can spur creativity and innovation and has the power to change the world. This books shows how with the right support, young people can maximise their potential.”
